Net effect of two successive percentage changes

When a quantity changes by x% and the result then changes by y%, the net percentage change is x + y + xy/100. Increases are taken as positive and decreases as negative. The formula shows why a 20% increase followed by a 20% decrease does not return the original value: 20 + (-20) + (20 × -20)/100 = -4, a net 4% decrease.
